The Value of Theatre

BYT uses the art of theatre to create shared experiences and stimulate personal development o Draws people from their homes to share and build community o Offers quality performances through guidance of theatre professionals who put youth development and community building first o Encourages experimentation and risk-taking in a safe and supportive environment o Produces classical original productions for enjoyment of children and adults, exploring universal themes and social issues o Fosters art awareness and appreciation, building future audiences

Youth Development

Through productions, camps and classes BYT gives young people opportunities to express themselves, build confidence and develop skills o Allows individual talents to blossom in a supportive and non-competitive environment, using auditions to tailor roles that meet the needs and capabilities of each individual o Builds self assurance while developing valuable public speaking and presentation skills o Requires young people to socialize with and work alongside people of different ages, cultures and abilities, broadening their understanding of community. o Instills responsibility and teamwork, since a successful production requires that everyone do his or her part. o Provides leadership, technical and interpersonal skills that open doors for career development

Inclusiveness

BYT creates community by involving people from all ages and backgrounds—young children, teens, adults and persons with disabilities o No one is turned away; everyone who auditions is cast, even if that means creating additional roles. o Youth who don’t have access, or may not feel that they fit in other programs, are welcomed and supported by staff who understand their needs o Persons with disabilities are supported by creating meaningful roles that accommodate specific individuals’ abilities and value every person’s contribution. o Older adults are regularly cast with youth performers, allowing opportunities for both mentorship and mentoring o Families are provided opportunities to perform together, creating enriching multi-generational experiences.

Why the new facility will help the Bellevue Youth Theatre program: The new building will increase the capacity of the program to serve more youth, adults and persons with disabilities The existing building will provide additional rehearsal space and will also offer incubator space for other theatre or arts groups The new facility will provide improved safety and security for children and offer additional space for theatre education and training The strategic location of the new theatre at Crossroads Park will increase access to the program for key segments of the population
